Ying Xiong

Academic Assessment Director

Ying’s assessment philosophy is built around the primary goal of assessment which is evidence-based inquiry and improvement of student learning. Deeply influenced by Barbara Walvoord’s assessment approaches, Ying’s assessment practice leverages existing data and resources and extends the assessment process beyond data collection. Collaborating with colleagues at the Teaching + Learning Commons and other assessment professionals on campus, she works closely with faculty members and campus leaders on designing and implementing assessment processes that generate useful and actionable results for educational improvement. Her goal is to create a healthy assessment culture that promotes and celebrates sustainable, manageable and useful assessment practices on campus.

Before she joined UC San Diego, Ying worked at two other large research universities including the University of Kansas and Stony Brook University. She holds a master’s degree with a concentration on Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics and Assessment from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).
