UGC-Hiring-Info-Session-1.png

We are hiring! We invite all interested UC San Diego undergraduates to apply for a writing consultant position in the 24-25 academic year. You can find more information on our application here. Applications close March 31.

We also invite you to join us on Thursday March 7, from 1PM - 2PM to learn more about the role in our upcoming hiring info session. This event is open to all UCSD undergraduate students. RSVP here to join.

Undergrad Writing Consultations

Make an appointment with one of our 40+ undergraduate writing consultants!

Undergraduate students can make up to 3 writing consultation appointments per week. Appointments are 45 minutes. Students can choose a face to face appointment (in Geisel), synchronous online appointment (i.e. live video), or asynchronous appointment (5-10 minute video feedback). Consultants available 6 days per week. Same day appointments available!

We have an appointment no-show policy:

Your appointment will be marked as no-show 15 minutes after the start time. Missing three appointments during one academic year without prior cancellation will result in your WCOnline account being deactivated, preventing you from logging in. You will, at that point, need to contact the Writing Hub administrative team (writinghub@ucsd.edu) to re-establish your active account.

Keep in mind that you can always cancel or modify appointments ahead of time by logging into the scheduling system at https://ucsd.mywconline.com or by contacting the Front Desk via e-mail at tlcadmin@ucsd.edu or via phone at (858) 246-2110. Please take note that appointments can be canceled up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the appointment in order to avoid being marked as no-show.

Grad Student Writing Retreats

Writing retreats are series of sessions that combine group workshops, individualized writing support, and dedicated time for making progress on long and/or complex writing projects. In each session, graduate students will interact with an encouraging community of writers from across the disciplines; learn strategies for developing productive and sustainable writing practices; overcome writer’s block; and make meaningful progress on writing projects such as seminar papers, research proposals, conference presentations, journal articles, theses, dissertations, and job application materials.

All retreats, with the exception of the HIGHLIGHTED options below, will take place over Zoom during Spring 2024.

APIMEDA Programs & Services

What is the APIMEDA Programs & Services and Writing Hub Collaboration?

This collaboration is between APIMEDA (Asian Pacific Islander Middle Eastern Desi American) Programs & Services and the Writing and Communication Learning Services (WCLS) at the Teaching and Learning Commons, established in 2020 to center the perspectives and needs of graduate students within these communities. WCLS has been developing similar partnerships with the ITRC, BRC, and Grad Division (such as the Competitive Edge fellowship program) to continue meeting the needs of students from all communities.

Graduate students engage in writing every day through various channels and media to succeed within and beyond their programs. We understand that writing is a conduit into broader conversations about research, knowledge, careers, self, and community. As such, writing can be used as an instrument to open/lead into these conversations about ourselves and our relationships to one another. In doing so, WCLS can promote a stronger sense of community and make sure that students feel they belong on this campus.

Given that writing at the advanced level is a universal and necessary skill for graduate students of all disciplines, it is critical for us to ensure that APIMEDA-identifying grad students have equal access to the services we provide at WCLS. This partnership is part of our ongoing efforts to provide customized, culturally relevant perspectives that center how students from APIMEDA communities navigate grad school. The long-term goal of this partnership is not transactional, but a long-lasting, organic relationship that establishes safe collective learning spaces and ensures agency within APIMEDA communities.

How did the partnership begin?

This partnership started in Winter 2020 between two graduate students: Doreen Hsu, who was the Sociology Department Graduate Writing Consultant at the time, and Vanessa Na, the Graduate Climate and Community Intern at the time for APIMEDA Programs & Services. In Fall 2020, APIMEDA Programs started offering services for graduate students as Grad Division hired graduate climate and community interns for all campus cultural community units. Doreen started attending APIMEDA Programs graduate student events such as the APIMEDA Programs Grad Welcome Event and Grad Cafes, and met Vanessa through those events.

Together, Doreen and Vanessa co-founded this partnership to address the needs they observed within their own graduate student communities. Through quarterly writing workshops, this partnership centers the experiences of students within APIMEDA communities, but all UCSD students are welcome to join for collective learning.

If you’d like more information about APIMEDA Programs & Services, you can visit their website here: https://apimeda.ucsd.edu/

UC San Diego Black Resource Center

What is the Black Resource Center-Writing and Communication Learning Services Partnership Program?

The partnership program between the Black Resource Center and Writing and Communication Learning Services (WCLS) at the Teaching and Learning Commons provides writing-centered resources that are specifically designed to cater to the experiences and needs of Black undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at UCSD. Under this program, we host events such as undergraduate community writing hours, writing workshops, and a graduate student writing group in the Black Resource Center and on Zoom. All UCSD students are welcome to attend these events.

How did this partnership begin?

Originally, the BRC and WCLS partnered together in response to the Black Student Union’s 2020 Statement of Demands in which they called for more resources, initiatives, funding, and programing with the aim of supporting Black student success at UCSD. Thus, “The Plug” was created.

“The Plug” was specifically focused on informing students of funded academic opportunities and providing them with guidance and support to promote student success throughout the application and selection process. However, like many programs and initiatives at that time, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted this service and it lay dormant for two years.

Revived and expanded in Winter 2022, the BRC-WCLS Partnership Program now focuses on responding to the writing-related needs within our Black undergraduate and graduate/professional students’ community: from class assignments to graduate school applications, fellowship and grants to job market applications, our writing consultants are available during “writing hours” and host regular workshops to support our writing community at the BRC.
