Dr. Friend will work with UCSD faculty in implementing an instructional approach, which focuses on mistake-driven Socratic pedagogy and assessing the effect on learning outcomes in a concrete manner. He will create data collection instruments, collect data and prepare a scholarly manuscript that can aid faculty at other institutions that likewise face the challenge of effective teaching in higher education. He hypothesize that by presenting the material with strategically introduced mistakes, the student comes to realize that they cannot simply take in the material as provided, and consequently must participate in the presentation of the material to confirm their understanding through the correction of perceived mistakes.
