Education Research and Assessment

Education Research and Assessment

The mission of the Education Research and Assessment Hub is to continuously improve student learning and the quality of UC San Diego’s academic programs.

Through our research and assessment work, we help instructors measure and understand student learning, gauge the impact of university initiatives to inform programming decisions, and provide evidence about how to enhance learning for the broader education community.

We also use research to improve the Teaching + Learning Commons’ programs and to provide the most beneficial learning experiences for UC San Diego students.

Specifically, the Education Research and Assessment Hub provides two core functions at UC San Diego:

Education Research Support

  • We help faculty answer compelling research questions regarding which teaching strategies are more effective at promoting learning, increasing engagement, and advancing equity and inclusion.  Our services provide the tools and expertise to help instructors develop research questions and study designs, identify valid and reliable data sources, analyze and interpret educational data, and present and publish research results.
  • We conduct assessments to determine the impact of university education initiatives to inform programming decisions and provide evidence about how to enhance learning for the broader education community.

Assessing Student Learning and Teaching Effectiveness

  • We collaborate with departments, programs, and individual faculty to enhance learning experiences and improve learning through various instructional approaches, learning assessment and strategies for increasing equity and inclusion in the curriculum.
  • We identify workable assessment strategies to measure the quality and effectiveness of academic programs and instruction; and, we help instructors measure and understand student learning.
  • These research and assessment efforts are critical to evaluating and documenting educational effectiveness and creating a culture of assessment. These efforts also support UC San Diego’s academic planning and accreditation activities in accordance with standards set by the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), UC San Diego’s accrediting agency.
