Commons' Student Employee Interviewed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science
June 2019

Destiny Moreno spent a quarter interning in Washington, D.C. with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) through the University of California Washington Center (UCDC) internship program. She was interviewed about her research and internship experience by AAAS - The American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Destiny is a rising senior majoring in Political Science, Public Policy at UC San Diego and a valued member of the Teaching + Learning Commons staff. Read her interview here

 

Graduate Teaching Consultant Wins Saltman Excellent Teaching Award

May 2019

Alex Meill, a Graduate Teaching Consultant for the Teaching + Learning Commons, was one of three students recently awarded the Barbara and Paul Saltman Excellent Teaching Award, Graduate Students! The award honors exceptional teaching by UC San Diego graduate student instructors. Alex has been dedicated to improving teaching through his work at the Engaged Teaching Hub. He improved a Physics Lab course within his department and in this process created new labs, lectures, and assessments, that resulted in improved student evaluations for himself and his colleagues.

All three Saltman Teaching Award winners have engaged with the Teaching + Learning Commons through participating in graduate student programs like the Summer Graduate Teaching Scholars Program and the Introduction to College Teaching course.

Graduate Teaching Consultant receives UC San Diego Interdisciplinary Research Award
May 2019

Rebecca Hardesty, a Graduate Teaching Consultant for the Teaching + Learning Commons, recently won a UC San Diego's Interdisciplinary Research Award. The award goes to graduate students whose research exemplifies the many diverse disciplines of study at UC San Diego. The Graduate Student Association and Graduate Division presented this award to Rebecca for her dissertation titled Biology and Pedagogy: From Public Outreach to Training Future Experts. Her dissertation work focuses on how Biology’s public outreach initiatives during the 1970s have transformed into increased efforts to train select students to meet the rigorous standards of the post-Human Genome Project era. Rebecca uses historical and ethnographic methods to reveal how communication and pedagogy are crucial for maintaining the field’s integrity and are essential parts of Biology's epistemic achievements.

Writing Consultant Wins Undergraduate Library Research Prize 
Winter 2019
 Congratulations to writing consultant Sherry Zheng for winning the annual Undergraduate Library Research Prize at UC San Diego for her research on Connecting with English Language Learners Through Shared Linguistic Backgrounds.

 

SI Program Earns International Certification
January 2019
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program at the University of California San Diego has just become one of a handful of programs in the country accredited by the International Center of Supplemental Instruction. The certification standards ensure initial training, performance, and ongoing professional development meet international standards for excellence. It is the gold standard for SI programs at the international level.

 

 Commons' Director Invited to be NCLCA Mentor
October 2018
Susan Rinaldi, Director of the Academic Achievement Hub in the Teaching + Learning Commons, has been invited to be a mentor for national learning center professionals at the annual National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA) Institute in July 2019.
