Christa Tiernan, Ph.D.

Interim Associate Director, Writing Hub

Dr. Christa Tiernan is an award-winning writing center professional committed to the development, implementation, and assessment of strategic initiatives for student success, retention, and completion. As Interim Associate Director of the Writing Hub, Dr. Tiernan brings to the Teaching + Learning Commons energy, enthusiasm, and prior writing center experience spanning over 12 years and 4 universities.

Dr. Tiernan began her career in writing centers as a graduate-level writing consultant, providing one-on-one and small-group writing instruction for 15 semesters at the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Building upon this experience, Dr. Tiernan then served as the Coordinator of the Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Assistant Director of the Center for Writing Excellence at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and the Director of the Writing and Media Center at Iowa State University of Science and Technology. Together with a strong leadership team, Dr. Tiernan transformed and expanded the Writing and Media Center, resulting in an almost 50% increase in consultations. In 2017, the Professional and Scientific Council at Iowa State University recognized the effectiveness of Dr. Tiernan’s leadership with a CYtation Award, which is granted to individuals who perform above and beyond the call of duty to make a substantial difference in the institution over the course of two years.

From 2018 to 2021, Dr. Tiernan served as a Lecturer in the Analytical Writing Program at the University of California, San Diego, bolstering students’ success in writing in the academic register.  

Dr. Tiernan holds a Ph.D. in English: Literary Studies with a Ph.D. minor in Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia, and a B.A. in Literature and Writing from the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Tiernan’s research interests include Victorian museum culture, material culture studies, and writing center studies.

Dr. Tiernan is a strong advocate for student research in writing center studies, having facilitated two dozen undergraduate and graduate researchers’ participation in professional writing center conferences.
