Jane Coulter, Ph.D.

Interim Director, Writing Hub

As Interim Director of the Writing Hub, Dr. Jane Coulter brings her commitment to the academic success and retention of UC San Diego’s undergraduate and graduate student population. Her work is informed by inclusive pedagogy; equitable hiring and training practices; and assessment-based program effectiveness.

Dr. Coulter most recently ran the Embedded Writing Mentor Program in the Analytical Writing Program at UC San Diego, where she led the ten-fold growth of this student support program from a staff of five undergraduate writing mentors to over 50 undergraduate and graduate writing mentors and TAs annually. During her tenure, the AWP writing mentors Dr. Coulter hired, trained, and supervised conducted over 38,000 one-on-one writing tutorials with UC San Diego’s undergraduate students.

Her teaching has included writing courses in the Warren College Writing Program and Analytical Writing Program, as well as a DEI course in Summer Bridge and other summer success programs.

Prior to coming to UC San Diego, Dr. Coulter worked in publishing, including writing and editing for a publication within The Economist Group. Dr. Coulter earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Boston University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Literature from the University of California, San Diego.
