Student Data

The Education Research + Assessment Hub supports UC San Diego faculty in developing course-level assessments. The Commons also partners with the Dean of Undergraduate Education on assessment for accreditation. Please contact us for a consultation or utilize the resources below.

Public Data

The Office of Institutional Research provides data analyses, reports, and services covering a wide range of topics, including accreditation, campus population, enrollment, faculty workload, and instructional space utilization. They make a variety of statistics and reports about undergraduate students and graduate students available on their website.

Restricted Data

The Student Activity Hub (SAH) combines information about undergraduate, graduate and professional students into a single repository. UC San Diego faculty and staff can securely access SAH through Tableau and Cognos. Learn more about the Student Activity Hub and request access to data here.

Individual-Level Student Data

Access to individual-level student data may be available to faculty and staff who have documentation of current FERPA training and IRB approval, when required, through UC San Diego's Human Research Protections Program (HRPP)

If you are considering using student data in a publishable study, IRB approval is also required.

a. FERPA - Confidentiality of Student Records and Privacy Rights

The university is legally and ethically obligated to protect the confidentiality of student records. To be granted access to data with personally identifiable and non-public information about students (e.g. grades or demographics), you must complete the FERPA - Confidentiality of Student Records and Privacy Rights course, which provides basic FERPA information for UC San Diego faculty and staff.

Under FERPA, uses of identifiable student data may include test development/administration, student aid program administration, instructional improvement, or other established educational interest.

FERPA information and FERPA training are available online.

If you are considering using student data in a publishable study, IRB approval is also required.

b. IRB - Institutional Review Board

If your research is intended for publication or presentation, you may need Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. Information on how to submit an IRB proposal to UC San Diego is available on the Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) website.
