Faculty Workshops


The Education Research + Assessment Hub at the Teaching + Learning Commons offers a variety of workshops focused on curricular assessment to support programs that are new to this work or looking to retool their approach. Workshops are designed to meet participants where they are at to move assessment projects from plan to action, with a focus on a sustainable, equity-minded practice.

Spring 2023 Workshops

Assessment Grant Workshops:

Are you interested in applying for an Assessment for Advancing Equity Grant? Attend this workshop to learn more about the application process and benefits of participating in the grant program.  Sponsored by the Executive Vice Chancellor and Division of Undergraduate Education, this grant offers units the opportunity to focus on curricular assessment with the goal of closing equity and opportunity gaps. The interactive workshop will include a synchronous (via Zoom) session, a zoom recording will also be made available on the grants website after April 13th. This session will give participants insight to the application process, pre-packaged grant templates, and support you with developing your assessment ideas. 


This is open to UC San Diego faculty across all disciplines, and recommended for those whose portfolio includes curricular assessment.

Assessment 102: I know what assessment is, now what? Learn about how the assessment cycle structure can help you implement assessment work that is sustainable, prioritizes closing opportunity gaps, and aligns with program review.

 Assessment 101: What is curricular assessment? Learn or refresh about the foundations of assessment including the assessment cycle, equity-minded assessment, and how you can apply these foundations to get started on your program-level assessment work.

Assessment in an Afternoon: What does it mean to be student-centered in assessment and analysis? During this session we will review a set of campus-wide survey results to gain insight into the undergraduate student experience within your specific department, college, or division to inform assessment planning by doing a short data analysis exercise.

Previous Workshops (2021-2022): Equity Design Lab

The ‘Equity Lab’ series is tailored to programs that are new to assessment or seeking to re-focus their efforts. Develop a year-long plan to structure faculty conversations around equity and curricular design and to explore successful models implemented at other institutions. 

  • Meeting 1: Culture of Inquiry 
    • Goal: Learn about assessment practices and how they advance equity.
    • Next Steps: Convene curriculum workgroup; review learning outcomes 
  • Meeting 2: Curriculum Mapping
    • Goal: Gauge how ‘legible’ our curriculum is for students and draft a preliminary curriculum map. 
    • Next Steps: Draft timeline for shared mapping exercise; prepare survey
  • Meeting 3: Pass Rates and Persistence 
    • Goal: Generate hypotheses about student persistence and curriculum structure.
    • Next Steps: Draft slide-deck for department data review; script breakout prompts
  • Meeting 4: Assessment Planning 
    • Goal: Plan an assessment to learn more about underlying causes of disparities in student outcomes.
    • Next Steps: Identify key question about learning; draft assessment plan

Previous Workshops (2021-2022): The Capstone Experience

The ‘Capstone Experience’ series is designed for programs that culminate in independent research, internship, or another experiential learning opportunity. Understand who is taking part and how the program sets students up for post-graduate success.

  • Meeting 1: High Impact Practices 
    • Goal: Understand who participates in your program’s capstone and how they benefit.
    • Next Steps: Convene capstone workgroup; review 5-year enrollment disaggregated
  • Meeting 2: Tools & Terminology 
    • Goal: Review the existing rubric for the capstone or draft/adopt a new one to assess student learning.
    • Next Steps: Develop an assessment plan that implements rubric-based scoring
  • Meeting 3: Experience & Engagement 
    • Goal: Draft a capstone survey, taking into account the experience of students of color and first generation students. 
    • Next Steps: Plan a survey or focus group to include in your assessment
