Dr. Kumiko Haas is the Director of Engaged Teaching in the Teaching + Learning Commons. She has worked in higher education for over 20 years and has extensive experience in teaching and in developing and leading programs aimed at faculty and student success. Prior to her appointment at UCSD, Dr. Haas served as Director of Instructional Improvement Programs at UCLA’s Teaching and Learning Center, working with individual faculty and overseeing the development and implementation of programs, services and activities across all schools and colleges on campus in support of innovative instructional improvement. She developed and taught intensive training programs, workshops, and seminars on issues of pedagogy, course design, instructional methods, inclusive and equitable teaching practices for new and experienced instructors. 

Dr. Haas received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the International Christian University in Tokyo, and earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from UC Berkeley. Her doctoral work at UC Berkeley and post-doctoral work at California State University, Los Angeles examined cultural and familial influences on student motivation, learning and academic success. Her expertise is in curriculum development, pedagogy, student learning, as well as student mentoring and advising.
