Annika Wong

Supplemental Instruction Coordinator

Annika is a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Coordinator at the Teaching and Learning Commons. She has always been fascinated by the way that relationships are built and maintained, inspiring her to study communication and eventually get her M.A. in Communication from SDSU. During her time at SDSU, she was a communication workshop instructor at the San Diego Sheriff’s Department Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility. In this role, she got to work with a diverse group of incarcerated persons and taught communication through a critical lens as an act of resistance against the hegemonic oppression that incarcerated students face. She was also able to work with and train other instructors who were entering into the jail to teach. Throughout this experience, she became extremely passionate about criminal justice reform and equitable educational practices. Her thesis, which focused on how peer relationships impact learning for currently and formerly incarcerated students,  combined these two passions and won the President’s award at SDSU’s student research symposium.

As an SI Coordinator, Annika hopes to utilize her passion for continual learning, knowledge of peer relationships, and love of communication to best support UCSD’s SI program. She is committed to creating and maintaining accessible, inclusive, and equitable educational opportunities for all. In her free time she loves surfing, camping, and traveling, and is always looking for good book recommendations.
